Literacy & Numeracy support at Shepparton High School occurs in a number of different ways. We employ qualified tutors who work with students one-to-one with a mixture of withdrawal from class and in-class support. The students in this program are pre-tested and are placed on an individual learning plan that aims to meet each student's specific learning needs.
Students in this program are identified from Grade 6 transition reports, parent request, and/or teacher and coordinator referrals. Students are re-tested at the end of Semester 1 and their programs are adjusted as necessary. They are again tested at the end of year so decisions can be made about the type of support needed for the following year.
Literacy & Numeracy are treated as a whole school focus so staff are encouraged to consider literacy specific teaching strategies across all subject areas. Staff undertake professional development to increase their expertise in this area. Special activities run during Literacy and Numeracy week each year that involve all students in all learning areas.
The Read Aloud program at Year 7 is designed to teach students to read aloud with confidence so that the oral assessments they face in most subjects throughout their school lives is less threatening and they can develop confidence in oracy. This program is run by the literacy tutors and English teachers.
Shepparton High School also runs specialist programs for Koorie and ESL students across all curriculum areas and year levels according to individual student needs.
